The Importance of family caregivers in the society is quite galore. Caregivers assists us in doing many things to our loved ones, elders and seniors – with one of significance of family caregivers being taking care of our loved ones or elders.
It’s no longer a news that a family caregiver is an individual who provides physical and/or emotional care for an ill, agile or disabled loved one at home. For this reason, the importance of family caregivers should not be underestimated but rather be noted.
One of the reasons why we should take note of the importance of family caregivers is that, in many cases, the primary caregiver might be the spouse, partner, older child or even parent, and then take the mantle of reponsibilities on themselves by providing care for whosoever assigned to them while taking care of themselves and other family members as well.
Importance of Family Caregivers
In this post, we will be highlighting the importance of family caregivers in our home and in the society as well.
One of the importance of family caregivers is personal care. Caregivers tends to assist with handling our loved ones’ personal care such as: toileting, bathing, dressing e.t.c. All these could be challenging for our elderly loved ones, but caregivers provides intensive care in this area and therefore put our minds at rest.
Caregivers are responsible for executing the household chores such as: meal preparation, general cleanings, laundry, paying bills, going out to get groceries, driving and so on.
Doing all of these tasks as an agile elderly person is practically impossible, and it is on that note, the importance of family caregivers should be acknowledged because they assists us in relieving our elderly loved ones of the stress.
Another importance of family caregivers is the provision of emotional supports for our elderly loved ones. Let’s take an instance of when our loved ones is diagnosed with a serious health condition, those in that category might be overwhelmed by the emotional and physical turmoil the health challenge might impose on them.
Caregivers are charged with the important duty of providing emotional support and encouragement for those in this category as well as themselves. Note that, as a caregiver giving an emotional supports to his/her patient, communication is the vital key to achieve a smooth relationship between you and your patient. It is then very important to both share feelings openly and be empathic to the situation.
The importance of family caregivers also constitute their roles in medical care. Caregivers must be in attendance, be observant, ask questions and help loved ones in making decisions with the care providers.
They may also be responsible for administering, supervising, ordering, and picking up of medications, responsible for transportation to appointments, and dealing with scheduling, fixing billing, or even insurance issues. Caregivers may also be responsible for the assistance of other medical activities such as physical therapy, injections, feeding tubes, walk out, etc.
Importance of family caregivers is very vast. There are also some instances where caregivers stands as an intermediary between the doctor and the patient because of the patient inability to talk. Caretakers play a vital role in a sincere communication between doctors and patients, by relaying the patient preferences for treatment options to the doctor, mostly when the patient cannot or unwilling to speak for himself/herself.
However, family caregivers are very important not only to our loved ones but to the society at large. Without caregivers, the society will be affected and many homes would have been in distress because of finding no one to assist their elderly loved ones with personal care, household tasks, medical care and so on.
Therefore, November being the National Family Caregivers month is an ideal opportunity to make the importance of family caregivers known, and therefore appreciate them for what they have been doing and the positive impacts they have brought upon the society.
